IIS Web Farm Suggestions

We are looking at upgrading our current web farm from 2 - 2003 Web Edition boxes to 2 - 2008 R2 boxes and moving from NLB to ARR for load balancing.  We are looking at the best solution for managing the two R2 boxes in regards to IIS and content.  I have attempted to setup WFF twice and have failed both times.  With some of the posts I am hesitant on implementing this due to some of the issues I have read about.

What would be your recomendation as an alternate to WFF that will make administering the sites and IIS easy.  I am thinking about shared config for IIS and DFS for content.  Is there a fool proof way of setting up DFS so that if a file is corrupted that it won't replicate over to the other servers and bring down all of the sites?

Any ideas or recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks
